# Quiz a class without student phones

> Classroom Mode runs a live quiz with printed answer cards: students hold them up, your phone scans the room. Free, no student accounts.

Classroom Mode runs a live quiz without student devices. One computer on the projector shows the questions. Each student answers by turning a printed card so their letter is at the top. You sweep your phone slowly across the room and it reads each card.

## What you need

A computer connected to the projector, your phone, and one printed card per student ([print answer cards](https://quizzy.earth/help/print-answer-cards)). A class can have up to 60 students.

## What it costs

Classroom Mode is free. Students don’t need accounts or devices, and you don’t need an account to run a lesson. Sign in to save up to 6 classes, so you can load the same roster next time.

## Cards or student phones?

Use cards when students don’t have devices, or when you’d rather phones stayed in bags. If every student has a phone, [host a quiz](https://quizzy.earth/help/host-your-first-quiz) as a regular game instead: it has typed answers and speed scoring. Cards only work with single-answer multiple-choice questions with up to four options.

## Questions

### Is Classroom Mode free?

Yes. Running a lesson needs no account. Signing in lets you save up to 6 classes.

### Do students need phones or accounts?

No. Each student only needs their printed card. Only you use a phone, as the camera.

### How many students can play?

Up to 60 students in one class.

### What if my phone loses its connection?

If your phone loses its connection, it shows “Reconnecting to the screen…” and keeps scanning. The cards it reads are saved on the phone, with a count, and sent when the connection is back. If the phone can’t reconnect, press Space on the projector computer to close the question.

### Is this like Plickers?

It’s the same idea: each student holds up a printed card, and one phone reads the whole room. In Quizzy it’s free, students need no accounts, and you don’t need one to run a lesson.
