# Group lessons by topic and sub-topic

> Tag a classroom lesson with a topic and sub-topic, such as Mathematics · Number, and your class report shows how the class is doing in each sub-topic.

A quiz on fractions and a quiz on decimals are both about Number. Tag each lesson with a topic, such as Mathematics, and a sub-topic, such as Number, and the [class report](https://quizzy.earth/help/track-class-progress) adds up every lesson in that sub-topic under **By topic**.

The topics and sub-topics on the list are the Australian Curriculum’s learning areas and sub-topics, the same names a report card uses. You can add your own as well.

## 1. Tag a lesson before you run it

Load a class from **Saved classes** and pick a quiz. Under **Settings**, choose a **Topic**, such as Mathematics, then a **Sub-topic** if you want one, such as Number. Your choice applies straight away.

Only lessons run with a saved class are kept in its report. Set the topic before you click **Start the quiz**. A lesson keeps the topic and sub-topic it started with, so to change them afterwards, use the lesson page (see below).

Quizzy remembers your choice for each saved quiz. The next time you run that quiz, with any of your classes, the same topic and sub-topic are filled in, with “From this quiz on” and the date under them. The first topic you tag in a class also becomes that class’s default, so a quiz you haven’t tagged before starts with that topic filled in. To leave a lesson untagged, empty the **Topic** box.

## 2. Add your own topic or sub-topic

In **Topic** or **Sub-topic (optional)**, type the name and choose the “Add …” option at the end of the list. Names can be up to 60 characters. If you type a name that’s already there, in any mix of capitals, Quizzy picks the existing one instead of making a second. You can’t rename or remove a topic or sub-topic yet.

## 3. Tag quizzes you’ve already run

On the class report, find **By quiz** and click **Group these into topics and sub-topics**. Under **Quizzes**, tick the quizzes that belong together. Choose a **Topic** and, if you like, a sub-topic, then click the tag button. It counts what you ticked, such as **Tag 1 quiz**. A line then says how many questions and lessons were tagged.

> **Note:** Grouping a quiz tags every lesson of it with this class, in every term, not only the period you’re viewing. Questions that already have a topic keep theirs. To tag one lesson differently, use the lesson page.

## 4. Fix one lesson’s tags

On the class report, under **By topic**, click **Lessons** at the bottom of a topic’s card, then click a lesson’s date to open it. A lesson with questions not yet tagged is also under **By quiz**, by its date under **Lessons**, and on a wide screen you can click a date at the top of the student grid. To set the whole lesson, click **Edit** beside its title (the pencil on a phone) and choose a **Topic** and **Sub-topic**. Moving the lesson to a different topic asks first, because its questions move with it. To change one question, click **Edit** beside it and set its **Topic** and **Sub-topic**, pick **No sub-topic**, or pick **Not grouped** to leave it out of **By topic**. Changes save as you make them: the question shows **Saving…**, then **Saved**.

The lesson page lists only the questions that were asked. A question counts once it closes or someone answers it, and the page says how many weren’t asked. On an archived class, you can read a lesson’s tags but not change them.

## 5. Give one question its own sub-topic

A quiz can cover more than one sub-topic. Open the quiz with **Edit quiz** in **Saved Quizzes** and open a question. Under **Sub-topic for this question (optional)**, choose a **Topic** and a sub-topic. It saves as soon as you choose, with no need to save the quiz. From then on, that question counts under its own sub-topic in every lesson you run, whatever the lesson is tagged with. Click **Clear** to make it follow the lesson’s sub-topic again.

A question’s sub-topic changes only lessons you run from then on, never past ones. To change a past lesson, use the lesson page. A question you’ve just added needs the quiz saved before you can give it a sub-topic. A question you edit keeps its sub-topic when you save. Duplicating a quiz doesn’t copy its sub-topics, so set them again on the copy. The sub-topic is yours alone. It applies to lessons you run, and doesn’t change the quiz for anyone you share it with. If you co-host someone’s quiz, their sub-topics don’t apply to your lessons.

## How tagged lessons show up

On the class report, **By topic** has one card per topic, with the class’s accuracy in each sub-topic. A lesson tagged with a topic but no sub-topic counts under **No sub-topic**. Questions with no topic never count in a sub-topic. They stay under **By quiz**, which counts only questions that were asked. When a lesson mixes sub-topics, each question counts in its own.

A student’s report has a **By topic** section too, with their accuracy in each sub-topic for each period. Work that isn’t tagged yet is under **Not yet grouped**. When you export the class’s results, each sub-topic gets two columns: its % and how many answers that rests on.
