Allow Quizzy on a school or office network
For IT teams: allow quizzy.earth, rt.quizzy.earth and quizzy-rt.fly.dev over HTTPS and secure WebSockets on port 443. That’s all a Quizzy game needs.
This page is for IT and network teams at schools, colleges and companies. Use it when players on your network see “game not found”, when the host’s lobby says Players can’t join right now, or when a game stops updating. Quizzy is a website. It needs ordinary web access plus one live connection, a secure WebSocket on port 443.
Allow the Quizzy website
Allow quizzy.earth and www.quizzy.earth over HTTPS on port 443. They serve the app, sign-in, question images and the game’s API.
Allow the live game server
Allow rt.quizzy.earth and quizzy-rt.fly.dev over HTTPS and secure WebSockets (wss://) on port 443. The host’s screen and every player’s phone keep one connection open to it for the whole game. Older pages and the Quizzy TV apps use quizzy-rt.fly.dev, so allow both.
Let WebSockets through your proxy
If your firewall or proxy inspects HTTPS traffic, exempt these hosts from inspection, or make sure it passes WebSocket upgrades through and doesn’t close idle connections within a few minutes. A connection that’s cut mid-game drops players out until it comes back.
Allow the exact hosts, not a category
Some web filters block quizzy-rt.fly.dev because fly.dev hosts many unrelated apps, or file Quizzy under “Games”. Add the exact host names above to your allow list instead of unblocking the whole fly.dev domain or category.
Test it
On a device on your network, open quizzy.earth/host, then join with a phone on the same network using the code on screen. If the player appears in the lobby within a few seconds, the network is ready. If the lobby says Players can’t join right now, the reason it gives tells you what is still blocked.
Optional hosts
Games work without these. Some extras need them: images.unsplash.com for stock photos in some quizzes, www.youtube-nocookie.com for videos in Classroom explanations, stream.mux.com and image.mux.com for videos in this help center, checkout.stripe.com for buying a plan, and challenges.cloudflare.com for the spam check on some forms. t.quizzy.earth, sentry.io, alb.reddit.com and www.redditstatic.com carry usage, error and ad-measurement reports. Blocking them doesn’t affect games.
Why does Quizzy say “game not found” on our school Wi‑Fi?
Usually the network blocks Quizzy’s live game server, so the host’s screen never reaches it and players’ phones can’t find the game. Allow rt.quizzy.earth and quizzy-rt.fly.dev, including WebSockets on port 443.
Which domains do I need to whitelist for Quizzy?
quizzy.earth, www.quizzy.earth, rt.quizzy.earth and quizzy-rt.fly.dev, over HTTPS and secure WebSockets on port 443. Everything else is optional.
Does Quizzy work behind a proxy or HTTPS inspection?
Yes, as long as WebSocket upgrades to rt.quizzy.earth and quizzy-rt.fly.dev pass through and long-lived connections aren’t cut. Exempting those hosts from inspection is the most reliable fix.
Do players need to be on the same network as the host?
No. Players can join from any internet connection, including mobile data. They only need the game code or the QR code on the host’s screen.
The host’s screen works, but students’ phones can’t join. Why?
Student or guest Wi‑Fi often has stricter filtering than staff networks. Allow the same hosts on every network players use, or let students join on mobile data.
Is Quizzy safe to allow on a school network?
Players join with a game code and a nickname. They don’t need an account, an email address or an app. See our privacy policy.
